Russia Rejects US Claims Regarding its Military Involvement in Libya

The Russian delegate to the Security Council emphasised the need for the formation of a unified government capable of organizing elections in the country. During a Security Council session dedicated to Libya, the delegate highlighted the importance of supporting the outcomes of the 6+6 Committee and promoting a meeting between the heads of the Libyan House of Representatives and the High Council of State, which could potentially lead to an agreement on elections.

In his speech, the Russian representative expressed concerns over violations of the arms embargo imposed on Libya. He pointed to reports of a security company training armed groups within Libya, beyond the control of the government. This company is purportedly linked to the U.S. Department of Defense, which contradicts the existing arms embargo.

The Russian envoy firmly rejected U.S. allegations regarding Russia’s military involvement in Libya. He stated that Russia has consistently opposed NATO operations in Libya, including the 2011 NATO intervention, which he claimed led to the country’s state collapse. He asserted Russia’s stance against any foreign military presence in Libya, advocating for its gradual end.

Furthermore, the delegate highlighted the security situation’s fragility, marked by ongoing clashes in Tripoli and at the borders. He urged the international community to double its efforts in supporting a Libyan-led political process that includes all stakeholders, including representatives from the former government.

The Russian delegate called for international support to empower Libyans to make their own decisions, advocating for a comprehensive dialogue that could result in a government able to conduct elections. He stressed the importance of not making decisions on behalf of Libyans, and instead focusing on supporting their sovereignty and political processes.

Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The county has for years been split between rival administrations.
