Security and national army forces in Libya continue their efforts to curb the flow of migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa and the eastern borders of Libya. Recently, the General Directorate of Security Operations in Tobruk, in cooperation with the Bir al-Ashhab Security Directorate, successfully detained 25 undocumented migrants of Egyptian nationality who were being held in a human smuggling den.

Migrants from various African and Asian countries, including Bangladesh, Pakistan, Egypt, Sudan, and Syria, pass through eastern Libya in an attempt to cross the Mediterranean Sea.

During a raid on an illegal immigration warehouse south of the municipality of Bir al-Ashhab, 25 undocumented Egyptian migrants were detained, including children under the age of 20, as stated by the administration on Saturday.

This is not the first time that undocumented migrants have been detained in the area.

Days before this incident, elements of the General Directorate of Security Operations in Tobruk raided another storage location for illegal migration south of the municipality of Bir al-Ashhab.

In that operation, 39 undocumented Egyptian migrants were also detained. Legal proceedings were initiated, and they were referred to the relevant authorities for deportation through the Imsaad land crossing to the Arab Republic of Egypt.

Earlier this month, the Anti-Illegal Immigration Agency in Libya has successfully repatriated 30 Nigerian migrants from Benghazi.

This operation, conducted in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration, is part of Libya’s continuous efforts to address the challenges of irregular migration.

This recent action follows the deportation of 26 Egyptian migrants, who were sent back to their homeland via the Imsaad Land Crossing last Monday, showcasing the Libyan authorities’ resolve in managing migration flows.

Further emphassing the scale of migration activities, the agency’s Benghazi branch reported the detention of over 1,500 migrants earlier this year, underscoring the ongoing struggle with migration issues in the region.

In March, security cooperation between the Security Operations Branch and the Tobruk Security Directorate led to the arrest of 81 undocumented migrants found on a beach in the “Ghabs” area along the Shatt al-Shawaer coast.
