The Prime Minister of the Libyan Government-designate Osama Hammad has issued directives for the establishment of a new university in the Kufra Municipality, named Kufra University. The university will enjoy legal personhood and financial independence and will operate under the supervision of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
This initiative is outlined in Decision No. 119 of 2024, which mandates the Ministry of Higher Education to undertake the necessary procedures for accrediting the internal system of the university, including its colleges and departments, to ensure the smooth progression of the educational process.
Dr. Mansour Mohamed Ali Buiaydah has been appointed as the president of Kufra University. He will perform his duties in accordance with the prevailing laws and legislation.
The establishment of Kufra University marks a significant step in enhancing educational infrastructure in one of Libya’s remote areas, aiming to boost local development and provide higher education opportunities to residents in and around Kufra.
Notably, the Libyan Government-designate estimated that approximately 40,000 Sudanese have been displaced due to the war in the Libyan city of Kufra, adjacent to the borders of both countries.
This was stated in a speech by the Libyan Minister of Health, Othman Abdul-Jalil, on Monday, during his visit to Sudanese displaced persons in the city of Kufra in southern Libya.
Abdul Jalil stated, “We estimated the number of Sudanese who have fled to Kufra to be around 40,000 individuals.”
“It is difficult to know the exact number of these displaced people due to continued waves of migration from Sudan, and the actual number requires field census teams,” he added.
“We have assigned medical teams to conduct examinations and tests for the displaced to diagnose their condition and provide them with healthcare. We will offer treatment and medical supplies to all patients, especially those suffering from critical or infectious diseases,” he continued.
“We welcome our Sudanese brothers to their second home, Libya,” he concluded.
