Libya’s Acting Foreign Minister of the Government of National Unity (GNU), Taher Al-Baour, received Japan’s Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Fukazawa Yoichi, and his accompanying delegation at the ministry headquarters in Tripoli.

According to a statement from the Libyan Foreign Ministry, the meeting discussed enhancing bilateral relations and exploring new avenues for cooperation between Libya and Japan.

It also aimed at strengthening the bonds of friendship and partnership between the two countries across all levels, particularly in economic and investment fields.

Both parties agreed to establish joint committees, affirming their mutual desire for further cooperation between the nations.

Libya’s government is actively seeking to strengthen its economic relationships with key global partners, including Japan. In a recent meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Tripoli, El-Baour welcomed Izuru Shimmura, the Japanese Ambassador to Libya.

The meeting was also attended by Nouri Al-Kaseh, Director of the Asia and Australia Department at the Ministry. Discussions focused on enhancing bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in various sectors, with a particular emphasis on economic development.

The talks underscored the importance of building a stronger partnership between the two nations, aiming to leverage Japan’s advanced technology and development expertise to support Libya’s ongoing economic recovery and growth.

In February, Japan pledged $1.6 million to assist UNICEF’s flood relief efforts in Eastern Libya, aiming to improve health, water, sanitation, and child protection services for communities affected by recent floods.

This donation coincided with the reopening of the Japanese Embassy in Libya, signaling a renewed commitment to support the needs of children and families impacted by the flooding. With this funding, the initiative plans to assist 165,000 people, including 75,000 children, by providing essential healthcare, access to clean water and sanitation, and child protection services.

This contribution follows Japan’s initial donation of $1 million in October 2023, aimed at supporting the immediate relief operations for flood-affected areas in Eastern Libya, including the severely hit city of Derna.
