Member of Libya’s Presidential Council Musa Al-Koni attended the 15th Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which commenced on Saturday in the Gambian capital, Banjul.
According to a statement from the Presidential Council, the summit is themed “Promoting Unity and Solidarity through Dialogue for Sustainable Development” and will continue through Sunday.
The summit is addressing key political issues facing the Islamic world, with a particular focus on the Palestinian cause. Discussions are also covering topics related to youth, women, families, science, technology, media, and the conditions of Muslim communities in non-member states.
The summit is also delving into issues such as combating hate speech, Islamophobia, enhancing dialogue, climate change, and food security.
In a significant sideline meeting, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met with Musa Al-Koni. Ahmed Abu Zeid, spokesperson for the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted Egypt’s commitment to supporting the unity and cohesion of Libya’s Presidential Council as part of the historic ties between the two nations.
Minister Shoukry reiterated Egypt’s unwavering support for a Libyan-led resolution process. He pointed to ongoing efforts in Cairo aimed at reconciling views among Libyan factions and supporting dialogue facilitated by the Arab League involving Ageela Saleh, head of Libya’s House of Representatives (HoR) Mohamed Takala, head of the Libyan High Council of State; and Mohamed Al-Mnifi, head of the Presidential Council. These discussions aim to reach a consensus on conducting simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections under a unified government as soon as possible.
The meeting also emphasised the urgent need to dissolve militias and ensure the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya within a specific timeframe, in line with United Nations Security Council resolutions and the outcomes of the Paris and Berlin processes.
This summit marks a critical step in fostering dialogue and cooperation among Islamic nations to address common challenges and promote sustainable development across the Muslim world.
