Libyan Health Minister Osman Abdel Jalil met with Dr. Sanad Issa, the World Health Organization (WHO) Coordinator in Benghazi, to discuss a health response plan for the Sudanese displacement crisis in the city of Kufra.
The Libyan Ministry of Health has designated the WHO as the coordinating body for response efforts, in collaboration with all United Nations agencies and non-governmental international organisations working in the health sector in Libya.
The ministry explained that the response plan includes assessing and identifying health needs through the specialized departments of the Libyan Health Ministry and in cooperation with the WHO. This effort will involve the exchange of health information, epidemiological bulletins, and the coordination of logistics for the transportation of medicines, supplies, and medical equipment.
The response also includes the deployment of specialized medical teams in Kufra and its suburbs through the main emergency room of the Ministry and a health emergency room established in Kufra by the ministry. The main emergency room of the Ministry of Health and the WHO will hold regular and periodic meetings to review progress and address any challenges or difficulties encountered in the response process.
Notably, the Joint Security Emergency Room in southeastern Libya launched an electronic system to register displaced Sudanese.
The Joint Room urged all displaced persons to head to the system’s headquarters at the Illegal Immigration Combat Agency in Kufra, starting from Sunday, to fill out and authenticate the required forms, submitting them to the relevant committee for issuing registration cards. The aim is to facilitate their movement within the country smoothly.
On April 28th, the Security Media Office of the Interior Ministry announced the formation of a joint security emergency room in the southeastern region.
Last week, the Libyan government dispatched a shipment containing all booster vaccinations to the city of Kufra, located in the south of the country.
“The campaign will cover all citizens and Sudanese refugees alike, for age groups from one day old up to 15 years old,” the statement said.
The Libyan government indicated that vaccines will be administered by medical teams in the city, in coordination with the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC), supported by the Kufra Health Services team.
This campaign follows the implementation of a plan set by Health Minister Dr. Othman Abdul Jalil, following his recent visit to Kufra.
The government estimated that approximately 40,000 Sudanese have been displaced due to the war to the Libyan city of Kufra, adjacent to the borders of both countries.
