On Thursday, the spokesperson for the Libyan National Army (LNA) Major General Ahmed Al-Mismari, affirmed that Al Karama Operation (Operation Dignity) emerged from a popular and national uprising within Libya, aimed at eradicating terrorism and halting the bloodshed in several cities.
In an interview with Egypt’s “Youm7” news newspaper, Al-Mismari stated, “Al Karama Operation was a demand of the entire population. The LNA General Commander, along with members of the military, assumed full responsibility to confront terrorists who had seized control of financial resources, weapons, and military camps with foreign support.”
Al Mismari emphasized that the Al Karama Operation was a public demand to rectify misconceptions, liberate the Libyan state, and establish security and law across the entire Libyan territory. The operation sought to end the destructive chaos instigated by many agents with regional and international backing.
“The fight against terrorism has lasted for many years, starting with the liberation of Benghazi, followed by significant battles against extremist groups throughout Libya,” Al-Mismari added.
The LNA Spokesperson also highlighted the current role of the Libyan Army in national development. “In recent years, the General Command has undertaken development programs in the country, including the restoration of agricultural projects and addressing issues related to roads and transportation.”
He noted that companies are working on constructing new roads spanning vast distances and reviving reconstruction efforts in various cities. “The armed forces have successfully imposed security and stability on the ground and are working towards fulfilling the aspirations of the Libyan people for prosperity and development in full coordination with the government appointed by the parliament,” Al-Mismari stated.
Regarding the army’s efforts in rebuilding war-torn cities, he explained that the LNA General Command is swiftly working on the reconstruction of Derna following the devastation caused by Hurricane Daniel. He confirmed that numerous companies are involved in the reconstruction of Derna and the Green Mountain region, expressing hope for the resolution of political issues to ensure unified efforts for the benefit of all Libyans.
The Libyan commander lamented that political division has cost Libya many years and opportunities for development and growth.
Libya has been embroiled in conflict and political turmoil since the 2011 uprising that ousted long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi. The country has since been divided among various factions, with the eastern part primarily controlled by the LNA under General Khalifa Haftar.
Al Karama Operation, launched in 2014, was a significant military campaign led by Haftar to reclaim Benghazi from extremist groups. The campaign marked a pivotal moment in Libya’s ongoing conflict, leading to years of intense fighting across the country.
The Libyan National Army’s current focus on development and reconstruction reflects a shift towards stabilization and rebuilding. The army’s involvement in infrastructure projects, agricultural restoration, and urban development is seen as essential for Libya’s recovery. However, the enduring political fragmentation poses significant challenges to unified national efforts for development and peace.
