Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Libya, Jeremy Berndt, has voiced deep concern over the disappearance of Libyan MP Ibrahim Al-Dirssi and called for his immediate and safe return to his family.
During a meeting with the First Deputy Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, Fawzi Nuweiri, in Benghazi, Berndt highlighted the urgency of addressing this situation. “The disappearance of MP Al-Drissi is troubling, and we urge for his prompt return to his family,” Berndt stated.
The discussions between Berndt and Nuweiri also focused on ways to support the UN-facilitated political process in Libya. They explored strategies to bolster bilateral relations between the United States and Libya, aiming to enhance the stability and prosperity of the nation.
Berndt reiterated the United States’ commitment to supporting Libya during its transitional phase. He emphasised the importance of political dialogue and cooperation to ensure a peaceful and prosperous future for Libya. “Strengthening our bilateral ties and supporting the UN’s efforts are crucial steps toward achieving lasting peace and stability in Libya,” he added.
The meeting underscored the need for continued international support for Libya’s political process. Both parties expressed their hope that increased collaboration would lead to a more stable and secure environment in the country.
On Saturday, the Libyan Ministry of Interior announced an urgent and comprehensive investigation into the disappearance of Al-Drissi. The Ministry has assigned the Benghazi Security Directorate and the Internal Security Agency to lead the inquiry, reflecting the gravity of the situation. The Ministry firmly denied circulating rumors about the death of MP Al-Drissi.
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has also expressed its deep concern regarding the kidnapping of Ibrahim Al Drissi, an elected member of the House of Representatives for Benghazi. The mission has called on the relevant authorities to locate and secure his immediate release, urging a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding his disappearance and holding those responsible accountable under the law.
UNSMIL strongly condemned all forms of arbitrary detention across Libya. Such actions undermine the rule of law and create a climate of fear.
