On Thursday, Libya’s Foreign Minister of the Government-designate, Abdulhadi Al-Hwaij, met with the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator and Deputy Head of the UN Mission to Libya, Georgette Gagnon, at the Ministry headquarters in Benghazi. The high-level delegation included the UNHCR Chief, Asir Al-Mudhaib.

According to the government’s media office, the discussions focused on various issues, primarily the legal status of the UNHCR and other international organizations, the memorandum of understanding between the UNHCR and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and methods to access affected areas and shelters to provide humanitarian services.

The Ministry emphasized the importance of organizations working with the committee formed by Prime Minister Osama Hammad under Decision No. (56) of 2024, addressing the situation of displaced Sudanese nationals.

The organizations are urged to operate in line with the needs of the specialized ministerial committee. Additionally, the Minister was briefed on the latest updates and reports concerning the UN Mission’s activities in Libya.

On Thursday, the Director-General of the Libyan Reconstruction and Development Fund, Belgassim Haftar, along with the Executive Director of the Reconstruction Fund for Derna and Affected Cities, welcomed a United Nations delegation led by Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Humanitarian Coordinator for Libya, Georgette Gagnon, in Tripoli. The meeting centered on advancing stability and development efforts in Derna.

During the discussion, the Belgassim Haftar presented a comprehensive reconstruction plan for Derna and other affected areas. This plan includes significant projects such as rebuilding infrastructure, improving public housing, upgrading sewage systems, and constructing and repairing dams, all adhering to the Fund’s established methodology.

On her part, Gagnon expressed her satisfaction with the ongoing development in Derna and emphasized the UN’s commitment to maintaining strong coordination and cooperation to achieve shared goals. She highlighted the importance of these efforts for the citizens of Derna and other impacted regions.
