Libya’s Economy and Trade Minister, Mohamed Al-Hwaij, met with representatives of Libyan companies operating in China. He emphasised that his ministry will promote investment and privatisation to achieve development and diversify the Libyan economy.
He also referred to the visit of the Libyan delegation from the ministry to China in December 2023. This visit aimed to strengthen economic and trade cooperation towards a partnership that serves the mutual interests of both countries.
Al-Hwaij encouraged Libyan companies to enhance commercial and investment relations with China’s leading sectors. He urged them to establish investment partnerships for projects across Libya according to the investment map of the General Authority.
The meeting reviewed the status of Libyan companies in China, their activities, and the challenges they face. Discussions focused on identifying obstacles and finding solutions.
The company representatives called for the activation of the Libyan-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and the appointment of a president in consultation with Libyan companies and investors engaged in China. This would help boost economic and investment relations and increase trade between the two countries.
Additionally, they requested facilitated participation in economic forums and trade fairs through the General Authority for Exhibitions and the Export Development Centre, which are affiliated with the ministry, according to a ministry statement.
China, through its newly appointed ambassador to the United Nations, Fu Cong has emphasized the importance of a Libyan-led and owned political process, reaffirming its ongoing support for stability in Libya.
This was stated during a meeting last Tuesday between the Chinese ambassador and Libya’s representative to the UN, Taher El-Sonni, where they discussed various issues and the necessity of building on the historical and fruitful cooperation between the two nations.
China is looking to reactivate its relations with Libya through the Libyan-Chinese Business Council to facilitate the work of the private sector and enhance trade cooperation.
This follows a meeting in April between the Minister of Economy of the Government of National Unity, Mohamed Al-Hwaij, and the acting Chinese Ambassador to Libya, Liu Jian.
