On Thursday, the Libyan-Italian Joint Working Group on Security held its fourth meeting at Tripoli’s Ministry of Interior headquarters. The meeting, chaired by Major General Noureddine Abu Jarida, Director of the Department of Relations and International Cooperation, included both countries’ officials from the Ministries of Interior, Defense, and Foreign Affairs.
Libya and Italy explored ways to enhance security cooperation in combating illegal migration and human trafficking, as well as securing their shared borders. Discussions focused on providing necessary equipment, tools, and technologies to support the security forces handling these issues. Both sides also agreed to organize advanced specialized training courses to further develop the capabilities of these security agencies.
The two countries have a longstanding history of cooperation, particularly in security and migration. This relationship has become increasingly significant due to the migration crisis affecting the Mediterranean region for over a decade. Libya, as a major transit point for migrants and refugees attempting to reach Europe, is central to this issue.
In recent years, both countries have made concerted efforts to address the challenges posed by illegal migration and human trafficking. Italy has provided substantial support to Libya, including funding, equipment, and training for Libyan coast guard and border security forces. This support aims to improve Libya’s capacity to control its borders and manage migration flows more effectively.
The cooperation extends beyond migration management to broader security concerns, including counterterrorism and organized crime. By working together, Libya and Italy seek to enhance regional stability and security, which is crucial for both nations given the strategic importance of the Mediterranean.
The recent meeting in Tripoli underscores the ongoing commitment of both Libya and Italy to address these pressing issues. Major General Abu Jarida emphasized the importance of joint efforts and the need for continuous support from Italy to bolster Libya’s security apparatus. The provision of modern equipment and technologies is seen as a critical step in enhancing the operational effectiveness of Libyan security forces.
