On Monday, the Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives Ageela Saleh held talks with Stephanie Khoury, the Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), and her delegation in the city of Al-Qubba. The meeting focused on Libya’s current situation and explored ways to end the ongoing crisis.
During the talks, Saleh emphasized that the key to resolving Libya’s crisis is to hold presidential and parliamentary elections and to form a unified government. He stated that such a government would have the primary responsibility of overseeing the electoral process in accordance with the will of the Libyan people.
Libya has been in turmoil since the 2011 overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime, which led to a power struggle among rival factions controlling different parts of the country. This division has resulted in prolonged conflict and instability, severely affecting the nation’s development.
The United Nations, through UNSMIL, has been actively mediating between the conflicting parties in Libya. The goal has been to bring about a political solution that ensures peace and stability. UNSMIL has facilitated various dialogues and negotiations aimed at paving the way for democratic elections and the formation of a unified government.
Ageela Saleh, a prominent figure in Libyan politics, has consistently advocated for a unified government and elections as the only viable solution to the crisis. Saleh’s call for elections reflects the broader desire among Libyans for a legitimate and democratically elected government to lead the country out of its current predicament.
The formation of a unified government is seen as a crucial step toward stability in Libya. Such a government would have the mandate to oversee the electoral process and ensure it is conducted fairly and transparently. This move is significant in fulfilling the aspirations of the Libyan people for peace, democracy, and development.
