The Doctors Without Borders (MSF) organisation reported that early this morning, the Geo Barents team successfully conducted two rescue operations in the Libyan Search and Rescue (SAR) region, bringing 146 people safely onboard. The rescued individuals are now receiving the necessary care and attention.

The Italian authorities have designated Civitavecchia as the place of safety for those rescued.

In the first operation, 37 people in distress were found aboard a white fiberglass boat. The swift response of the Geo Barents team ensured their safe transfer to the vessel.

In the second operation, 109 individuals were rescued from a grey rubber boat that was also in distress. The team acted promptly to secure their safety and bring them onboard the Geo Barents.

The rescues highlight the ongoing humanitarian efforts in the Mediterranean to save lives and provide essential support to those fleeing perilous conditions. The timely intervention by the Geo Barents team underscores the critical role of search and rescue operations in mitigating the risks faced by migrants and refugees in the region.

Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The county has for years been split between rival administrations.

Libya’s economy, heavily reliant on oil, has suffered due to the ongoing conflict. The instability has led to fluctuations in oil production and prices, impacting the global oil market and Libya’s economy.

The conflict has led to a significant humanitarian crisis in Libya, with thousands of people killed, and many more displaced. Migrants and refugees using Libya as a transit point to Europe have also faced dire conditions.

The planned elections for December 2021 were delayed due to disagreements over election laws and the eligibility of certain candidates. This delay has raised concerns about the feasibility of a peaceful political transition.

Despite the ceasefire, security remains a significant concern with sporadic fighting and the presence of mercenaries and foreign fighters. The unification of the military and the removal of foreign forces are crucial challenges.
