On Monday, the head of the Libyan Presidential Council Mohamed Al Mnifi received a comprehensive security briefing from experts at the Libyan Intelligence Service and the Anti-Terrorism Unit.

The briefing focused on the latest developments and challenges related to illegal immigration and its associated security concerns.

In a statement, the Council’s media office said that the meeting addressed the complex interplay between counter-terrorism efforts and illegal immigration. The discussion highlighted the latest issues faced by Libya due to the increasing influx of illegal migrants.

Libya has long been a critical transit point for migrants and refugees attempting to reach Europe. The country’s strategic location along the Mediterranean coast has made it a preferred route for those fleeing conflict, persecution, and poverty in Africa and the Middle East. However, the journey is perilous, and many migrants fall victim to human traffickers, exploitation, and dangerous sea crossings.

The situation has been further complicated by Libya’s ongoing internal conflict and political instability. Various armed groups and militias control different parts of the country, often exploiting migrants for labor or ransom.

The Libyan coast guard, with support from the European Union, has been involved in intercepting migrant boats and returning migrants to Libya, where they are often detained in harsh conditions.

In June, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) reported rescuing 160 migrants and recovering the bodies of 11 others from dilapidated boats off the Libyan coast. Such incidents underscore the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the need for comprehensive international cooperation to address the root causes of migration and improve the safety and rights of migrants.

Amid these challenges, the Libyan capital, Tripoli, is set to host the Mediterranean Migration Forum in mid-July. This significant event will bring together African and European nations to discuss collaborative approaches to managing migration across the Mediterranean. The forum aims to develop strategies to enhance border security, combat human trafficking, and provide better support and protection for migrants.

The Libyan government has expressed its commitment to addressing the issues of illegal immigration and terrorism, recognizing their impact on national security and stability. The Presidential Council’s engagement with security experts and international partners is a step towards finding sustainable solutions to these pressing challenges.
