Libyan Deputy Transport Minister of the Government of National Unity, Fadlallah
Ashour, met with Russian Ambassador to Libya, Aydar Aganin, to discuss the reactivation of the 2009 contract between the Railway Project Implementation and Management Agency and the Russian Railways Company. The contract concerns the implementation of the “Sirte-Benghazi” railway project. The meeting was also attended by the agency’s head, Saeed Al-Kilani.
The discussions centred on the ways to restart the significant railway project that has been stalled for years. Ashour emphasised the importance of this project for improving Libya’s transport infrastructure and boosting the country’s economy. He highlighted that reviving the “Sirte-Benghazi” railway is crucial for connecting key cities and facilitating trade and movement.
Ambassador Aganin expressed Russia’s readiness to cooperate and resume work on the project. He noted that the railway would not only enhance Libya’s internal connectivity but also strengthen bilateral relations between Libya and Russia. Aganin reiterated Russia’s commitment to supporting Libya in rebuilding its infrastructure.
Both parties agreed on the need for a clear roadmap and timeline for the project’s reactivation. They discussed potential challenges and the necessary steps to ensure a smooth resumption of work. The meeting concluded with a mutual understanding of the project’s strategic importance and a commitment to collaborate closely to see it through to completion.
The reactivation of the “Sirte-Benghazi” railway project is expected to provide numerous benefits, including job creation, improved logistics, and enhanced economic activity.
