On Thursday, Libya’s Prime Minister of the Parliament-designated government, Osama Hammad vowed to uphold principles of transparency and disclosure in all matters related to public finance. This commitment was made during his meeting with Omar Abd Rabbo, the Chairman of the Audit Bureau, at the Prime Minister’s office in the Cabinet’s headquarters in Benghazi.
According to a statement from the government’s media office, Prime Minister Hammad, emphasized the crucial role of the Audit Bureau in overseeing government operations and ensuring that it fulfills its mandated responsibilities. He assured that his administration would fully support the Bureau’s activities to solidify transparency and the public’s right to scrutinize all public funds procedures.
On his part, the Audit Bureau Chief commended the government-supported development and reconstruction projects currently being implemented by the Development and Reconstruction Fund. He highlighted the Bureau’s professional handling of urgent issues, such as the rapid response to the recent cable outages in Benghazi.
Libya has been grappling with political instability and economic challenges since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011. The country has seen a fractured political landscape, with rival governments and militias vying for control. The Government of National Unity (GNU), led by Abdul Hamid Dbaiba, and the parallel administration in the east, where Osama Hammad is Prime Minister, are key players in this ongoing power struggle.
The Audit Bureau plays a pivotal role in promoting transparency, fighting corruption, and ensuring the proper use of public resources. It has been instrumental in identifying and addressing financial discrepancies within government institutions. The Bureau’s work is critical in a country where public trust in governmental processes has been severely undermined by years of conflict and corruption.
Prime Minister Hammad’s commitment to transparency is a positive signal to both the Libyan population and the international community. Ensuring that public funds are managed transparently and efficiently is essential for Libya’s progress towards peace, stability, and prosperity.
