The US Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) arrested a Libyan national in San Francisco during a nationwide operation targeting human rights violators from June 10 to June 14.
The operation, led by ERO’s National Fugitive Operations Program in coordination with the Human Rights Violators and War Crimes Center of Homeland Security Investigations and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Office of the Principal Legal Advisor, involved multiple ERO offices across the United States.
“The individual arrested in the San Francisco area is a known or suspected human rights violator. He engaged in activities that caused great harm to his fellow citizens without regard to their due process,” said ERO San Francisco Field Office Director Moises Becerra.
“This individual fraudulently entered the United States in an attempt to escape justice. He is now in ICE custody pending removal,” he added.
All foreign nationals arrested during this operation have outstanding final orders of removal and are subject to removal to their countries of origin. In addition to the Libyan national, the operation resulted in the arrest of individuals from Central America, Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and the Caucasus.
Since 2014, ERO has conducted nine operations targeting known and suspected human rights violators.
The ERO siad in a statement that this latest operation demonstrates ERO’s ongoing commitment to identifying, investigating, prosecuting, and removing human rights violators who seek safe haven in the United States.
ICE’s Human Rights Violators and War Crimes Center, established in 2009, investigates human rights violators attempting to evade justice by seeking refuge in the U.S. The centre’s efforts have led to the arrest of more than 510 individuals for human rights-related violations and the removal of 1,125 known or suspected human rights violators from the U.S.
