The Dutch Ambassador to Libya, Joost Klarenbeek, has called for the immediate and unconditional release of journalist Ahmed Al-Senusi, who the Internal Security Apparatus has detained for two days.
In a statement on the “X” platform today, Saturday, Ambassador Klarenbeek expressed profound concern over the arbitrary detention of Al-Senusi. “We are deeply concerned about the arbitrary arrest of journalist Ahmed Al-Senusi. The safety and rights of journalists must be protected, and any acts of arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, or mistreatment must be thoroughly investigated,” he said.
The Ambassador also supported the United Nations mission in Libya’s call for Al-Senusi’s immediate release, following his arrest on Thursday.
The UN mission’s statement emphasized that the suppression of journalists fosters a climate of fear and undermines the environment necessary for democratic transition.
The mission urged Libyan authorities nationwide to protect journalists and media workers.
On Thursday evening, the “Al-Wasat” media foundation announced that the Internal Security Apparatus was holding Al-Senusi, following a report from his family that they had lost contact with him after he left his home.
Journalist Ahmed Sennusi, owner of the economic newspaper “Sada” and host of the TV program “Flusna” on Wtv, has been detained for three days following his publication of documents exposing corruption within the Ministry of Economy and Trade of the interim Government of National Unity and its minister, Mohamed Al-Hwaij.
Sennusis family reported that he left his apartment in Tripoli on Thursday afternoon to run some errands, but then lost contact with him. Reliable sources confirmed that Al Sennusi is being held by the Internal Security Agency in Tripoli.
Subsequently, many media outlets confirmed that the Internal Security Agency is responsible for Sennusi’s detention, stating, “We have contacted law enforcement agencies in Libya, who confirmed that Ahmed Sanusi was detained on Thursday afternoon by the agency, without explaining the reasons behind this detention.”
