The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has congratulated the High National Elections Commission on successfully completing the first phase of voter registration across 60 municipalities in Libya.

In a recent statement published on its official website, the mission acknowledged the challenging circumstances under which 210,545 Libyan men and women registered to vote in the upcoming municipal council elections.

The statement praised all registered Libyans, highlighting their commitment to selecting their local leaders. UNSMIL encouraged all registered voters to verify the accuracy of their names and information to ensure a transparent voting process.

The mission also urged Libyan authorities to provide the necessary resources to facilitate the subsequent phases of the municipal electoral process. It noted the Commission’s efforts to boost female participation, which currently stands at 29% of the total registered voters for the municipal council elections.

UNSMIL concluded its statement by reaffirming its commitment to supporting both municipal and national elections, empowering Libyans to freely and safely choose their leaders and renew the legitimacy of their institutions.

Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The county has for years been split between rival administrations.

Libya’s economy, heavily reliant on oil, has suffered due to the ongoing conflict. The instability has led to fluctuations in oil production and prices, impacting the global oil market and Libya’s economy.

The conflict has led to a significant humanitarian crisis in Libya, with thousands of people killed, and many more displaced. Migrants and refugees using Libya as a transit point to Europe have also faced dire conditions.

The planned elections for December 2021 were delayed due to disagreements over election laws and the eligibility of certain candidates. This delay has raised concerns about the feasibility of a peaceful political transition.

Despite the ceasefire, security remains a significant concern with sporadic fighting and the presence of mercenaries and foreign fighters. The unification of the military and the removal of foreign forces are crucial challenges.
