Turkish Ambassador Reaffirms Support for Libyan Stability

On Monday, Mohamed Takala, Head of the High Council of State (HCS), met with the Turkish Ambassador to Tripoli Güven Begeç to discuss the bilateral relations between Libya and Turkey.

The meeting, held in Tripoli, focused on developing and strengthening ties between the two nations to serve both Libyan and Turkish interests. The discussions also covered cooperation on issues of mutual concern.

Ambassador Begeç emphasized the deep-rooted relationship between Libya and Turkey and reiterated Turkey’s commitment to enhancing stability in Libya. He highlighted Turkey’s efforts to promote security and peace across Libya and to facilitate reconciliation among political factions, aiming for a democratic path that concludes the transitional phases.

Libya and Turkey share a long history of diplomatic and economic relations. Over the years, Turkey has played a significant role in Libya, providing economic support, engaging in reconstruction efforts, and offering political backing during times of turmoil. The relationship has grown stronger, especially after the 2011 Libyan revolution, with Turkey being a key ally to the Libyan government recognized by the United Nations.

However, Turkey’s involvement in Libya has not been without controversy. Critics argue that Turkey’s military support for the former Government of National Accord (GNA) has exacerbated the conflict, contributing to a prolonged power struggle. Turkish military presence and support for certain factions have been seen as interfering in Libya’s internal affairs, drawing criticism from various international actors who advocate for a more neutral approach to peacebuilding.

Despite these controversies, the stability of Libya remains of strategic importance not only to Turkey but also to the broader region. Libya’s location in North Africa, along with its substantial oil reserves, makes it a critical player in regional politics and economics. Stability in Libya would ensure smoother operations of oil exports, enhance regional security, and provide a more conducive environment for international investments.

Turkey’s involvement in Libya is multifaceted, encompassing military support, economic investments, and diplomatic efforts. Turkish companies are significantly involved in infrastructure projects across Libya, contributing to rebuilding the nation’s war-torn cities and enhancing economic growth.

In recent years, Turkey has provided military assistance to the GNA, which has been instrumental in countering various factions vying for control. This support has been crucial in maintaining the GNA’s standing and promoting stability in key areas of the country.
