The Law Enforcement Administration of the General Directorate of Security Operations successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle significant quantities of fuel, foodstuffs, and electrical appliances on Tuesday. These items were intercepted before they could cross the Tunisian border through the Ras Ajdir border crossing.
The Administration’s actions are part of a comprehensive security plan to secure borders and combat the smuggling of subsidized goods, as directed by the Ministry of Interior of the Government of National Unity (GNU).
In a unique initiative, the Law Enforcement Administration announced that fuel, previously confiscated to prevent smuggling through the border, would be distributed free of charge to travelers coming from Tunisia via the Ras Ajdir border crossing. This move aims to utilize the seized fuel beneficially rather than destroy it.
The Ras Ajdir border crossing, which links Libya and Tunisia, was reopened at the beginning of this month after being closed for nearly three months. The reopening ceremony was attended by the GNU’s Interior Minister, Imad Al-Trabelsi, and his Tunisian counterpart, Khaled Al-Nouri.
In a press conference, Acting Minister of Interior Imad Al-Trabelsi stated that the closure of the border crossing on both the Tunisian and Libyan sides was intended to organize operations and end security breaches. He noted that he had agreed with his Tunisian counterpart to facilitate the movement of travelers and equip the crossing with inspection devices.
