Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya called for decisive steps to be taken to appoint a new UN envoy to Libya. This is to replace Ghassan Salameh, who resigned from his post last March.

In his statements to the UN Security Council, Nebenzya added that he does not see objective reasons for delaying the appointment of a new representative, especially as the African Union has proposed a strong candidate for this position.

Nebenzya confirmed that the post of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya has been vacant for four months now and this undermines efforts aimed at a achieving a peaceful settlement.

The situation in the country continues to worsen, with a military build up around the city of Sirte.
