On Sunday, the Libyan Minister of Water Resources, Mohamed Douma, met with representatives from Sichuan Jade Oil & Gas Technology Service Co., Ltd., a Chinese company, to discuss potential collaboration on water and sanitation technologies.

The meeting, which took place in Benghazi, focused on exploring advanced technological solutions to enhance Libya’s water infrastructure.

The focus was on how these technologies could support Libya’s efforts to upgrade its water supply and sanitation systems. Minister Douma emphasized the critical need for modern solutions to address the challenges facing the country’s water infrastructure, which has been weakened by years of conflict and underinvestment.

The Chinese delegation presented a detailed overview of their advanced water treatment and sewage management technologies, which have the potential to significantly improve the efficiency and reliability of Libya’s water systems. The discussions also included the possibility of conducting joint studies and exchanging expertise to ensure that Libya can fully benefit from these innovations.

Libya’s water sector is in urgent need of modernization. Decades of neglect, combined with the harsh desert climate, have left much of the country struggling to provide clean and reliable water to its citizens. This proposed partnership with Sichuan Jade Oil & Gas Technology Service Co., Ltd. offers a valuable opportunity for Libya to access state-of-the-art technologies that could make a real difference.

For China, this collaboration is part of a broader strategy to expand its influence in Africa through infrastructure development and technology sharing. For Libya, it represents a chance to rebuild and modernize its critical water infrastructure, which is essential for the country’s stability and development.

The discussions in Benghazi are expected to lead to more detailed negotiations, with the possibility of launching joint projects that could transform Libya’s water and sanitation landscape. As Libya continues its efforts to recover and modernize, partnerships like this one could be key to overcoming the country’s significant infrastructural challenges and improving living conditions for its people.
