The Libyan government led by Osama Hammad has praised the decision of the Libyan House of Representatives to reaffirm its confidence in his administration, recognising it as the legitimate executive authority.
In a statement issued as Decree No. 14 of 2024, the government urged judicial and oversight bodies to enforce this decision.
The decree follows the announcement by Parliament Speaker Ageela Saleh to end the mandate of the rival government led by Abdul-Hamid Dbaiba, declaring Hammad’s administration as the lawful government.
The Hammad government expressed its gratitude towards the Speaker and members of the Parliament for renewing their confidence, emphasising that the decision was based on the expiration of the legal term of the political agreement and the need to prevent a political vacuum.
Since receiving its mandate, the Hammad government asserted that it has been operating in compliance with the law, addressing the needs of the people impartially and working towards national goals, with a primary focus on organising general elections.
The government also called on all countries and regional and international organisations to engage positively with the House’s decision and support Libya’s legitimate institutions.
In contrast, Abdul-Hamid Dbaiba, the Prime Minister of the competing government, maintained that his administration derives its legitimacy from the political agreement incorporated into the constitutional declaration.
He dismissed the House’s repeated statements about withdrawing confidence as mere political opinions that hold no binding effect and do not alter the current situation.
