During a recent United Nations Security Council meeting, France’s representative voiced deep concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Libya, calling for immediate respect for the existing ceasefire agreement. Emphasizing the need for unity, the French envoy urged the unification of Libya’s armed forces and reiterated France’s support for the UN mission’s efforts within the security working group.
France also pressed for the swift resumption of the political process, advocating the formation of a new unity government and the organization of national elections to break the ongoing political deadlock. The French representative welcomed the ongoing dialogue between members of Libya’s two key councils in Cairo and urged all parties to preserve the unity of the High Council of State.
Meanwhile, the Russian representative to the UN Security Council highlighted that Libya’s political process has reached an impasse, with little hope for meaningful progress in the constitutional negotiations between the House of Representatives and the High Council of State. He warned that the current stagnation could lead to a prolonged internal crisis, further deteriorating Libya’s security and economic conditions, and worsening the living standards of ordinary citizens.
The Russian envoy emphasized that any future plans for Libya should be long-term and focused on the well-being of the entire population, avoiding short-sighted decisions or catering to specific groups’ interests. He cautioned against setting artificial deadlines or imposing external solutions.
The British representative, on the other hand, expressed support for political initiatives occurring outside the UN’s direct oversight, including the recent meeting between the House of Representatives and the High Council of State. He also backed the appointment of a new special representative to lead the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and called for Libyan leaders to engage fully in talks to advance the political process. The British envoy urged Security Council members to adopt a unified vision for a peaceful and secure Libya, stressing that such stability is vital not only for Libya but for the entire region.
