On Sunday, the Interior Minister of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fathi Bashagha, discussed with the Acting Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Stephanie Williams, his ministry’s plans to reform the security sector in Libya, and to pursue disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration programs.

Bashagha indicated in a tweet that they are determined to proceed with the implementation of these programs, which must be locally designed, on a comprehensive national scale, with Libyan leadership for the security and special attention given to the welfare of citizens

Bashagha had met with a number of American officials to discuss the ministry’s plan to develop its various services and divisions, after a visit by a delegation from AFRICOM and requesting from the Prime Minister of the GNA, Fayez Al-Sarraj, and his Interior Minister to dissolve a number of militias, including the Al-Nawasi and Bab Tawerga, as well as reorganise the work of the private deterrence militia in order not to be a force operating alone, but rather under the authority of the Interior Ministry.
