On Saturday, the Libyan National Army (LNA) extended its crucial airlift operation, delivering much-needed humanitarian aid to the residents of Gat Municipality after devastating floods swept through the city. Under the direct orders of Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, and with the close supervision of the Chief of Staff of the Ground Forces, the operation aims to provide essential relief to those impacted by the severe weather.
The ongoing airlift is delivering vital supplies, including food, medicine, and shelter materials, to support the residents of Gat, many of whom have been displaced by the floods. This effort is part of a broader initiative to address the urgent humanitarian needs in the region and to mitigate the effects of the natural disaster on the local population.
In a coordinated effort earlier this week, the Libyan Ministry of Endowments (Awqaf) and Islamic Affairs launched a humanitarian mission from Benina International Airport. An aircraft, loaded with aid, departed for Gat to assist those affected by the floods. This mission, organized by the Ministry’s Zakat Fund Administration and in collaboration with the LNA, provided critical supplies to support displaced families.
The LNA’s continued involvement in humanitarian operations highlights the ongoing challenges Libya faces due to its prolonged political and security instability. Since the 2011 uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi, the country has been plagued by conflict, division, and economic hardship, particularly in its vital oil sector.
Despite a ceasefire, the situation remains precarious, with Libya still divided between rival factions and the presence of foreign mercenaries complicating efforts toward peace and stability. The country’s delayed elections and the uncertainty surrounding them have further exacerbated the situation, making initiatives like the LNA’s airlift operation crucial for the well-being of the affected populations.
