On Sunday, the United Nations appointed Georgian diplomat Sophie Kemkhadze as the new Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Libya.
With extensive experience in international development, Kemkhadze will oversee the UN’s initiatives aimed at fostering stability and promoting sustainable development in the country.
Kemkhadze’s role will focus on several key areas, including the strengthening of democratic institutions, enhancing community resilience to conflict and climate change, and driving sustainable economic growth. She expressed her excitement for the new position, highlighting the importance of collaboration with both Libyan and international partners to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Libya.
With over 25 years of experience in leadership roles within the UN, including 17 years with the UNDP, Sophie Kemkhadze brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her new role. Her background includes significant work in countries such as Armenia, Nepal, Indonesia, and Somalia. She holds a PhD in Mathematics from the Georgian Academy of Sciences and a Master’s degree in Economics and Politics from the University of Warwick in the UK.
Kemkhadze’s appointment is seen as a crucial step in the UN’s ongoing efforts to support Libya’s path toward peace and development. Her leadership is expected to play a key role in strengthening international cooperation and providing the technical and financial support needed to achieve sustainable development in Libya.
Libya has faced significant challenges since the 2011 uprising that resulted in the ousting of Muammar Gaddafi. The country has been plagued by political instability, civil conflict, and economic difficulties. The United Nations has been actively involved in supporting Libya’s recovery, offering humanitarian aid, facilitating political dialogue, and helping rebuild essential institutions.
Sophie Kemkhadze’s appointment comes at a pivotal time as Libya seeks to move beyond years of turmoil and work towards a more stable and prosperous future. The UNDP has been instrumental in this process, focusing on promoting good governance, building resilient communities, and fostering economic growth. Kemkhadze’s extensive experience in diverse and challenging environments positions her well to lead these efforts.
The UNDP’s initiatives in Libya include supporting electoral processes, promoting human rights, improving public services, and enhancing local government capacity. These efforts are vital for laying the groundwork for long-term peace and stability in the country.
