Libyan House of Representatives Speaker Ageela Saleh welcomed the reconvening of the High Council of State (HCS) and the election of its new leadership, including the first and second deputies.
The statement was released on the House of Representatives’ official Facebook page.
Saleh expressed optimism that the reunification of the HCS would prioritise national interests and foster consensus with the House of Representatives.
He urged HCS President Khaled Al-Mishri to seek common ground with the House of Representatives to resolve the Libyan crisis and pave the way for elections and national stability.
Earlier on Wednesday, the HCS held a session attended by 77 members, chaired by its eldest member, Abduljalil Al-Zahi, with Hanaa Al-Arfi serving as rapporteur. The session was observed by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
During the session, the council elected Nagy Mukhtar as the first deputy president and Omar Khaled Al-Obaidi as the second deputy president. The election for the rapporteur position will be held in a subsequent session.
Meanwhile, outgoing HCS President Mohamed Takala rejected the session, calling it a “flagrant violation” of the council’s internal regulations. In an official statement, Takala described the session as a serious overstep of the powers outlined in the council’s internal rules.
