On Sunday, Algeria launched its first export of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations to Libya and Italy, a move that marks a major milestone in the country’s energy transition and economic diversification efforts.

This initiative, led by the Sonelgaz Group, signals Algeria’s growing role in the global green energy market, showcasing its capacity to produce and export advanced renewable energy infrastructure.

The first shipment of EV charging stations, which includes medium-capacity stations of 60 kW and high-capacity stations of 322 kW, was officially announced by Sonelgaz’s spokesperson, Khalil Hedna.

These stations, manufactured by the Algerian Electrical and Gas Industries Company—a subsidiary of Sonelgaz—are designed to meet international standards, reflecting Algeria’s commitment to quality and innovation in the renewable energy sector.

Libya, one of the primary recipients of these stations, represents a key market for Algeria. As Libya continues its recovery and reconstruction efforts, the introduction of electric vehicle infrastructure is crucial for its sustainable development. The deployment of these charging stations supports Libya’s shift towards cleaner energy solutions, reducing its dependency on fossil fuels and modernizing its energy sector.

For Algeria, entering the Libyan market is a strategic move that capitalizes on geographic proximity and the growing demand for renewable energy across North Africa. By supplying these advanced charging stations, Algeria is positioning itself as a leader in the region’s energy transition, ready to meet the increasing need for green infrastructure.

This export initiative is also a testament to Algeria’s broader goals of economic diversification. The establishment of the EV charging station manufacturing plant by the Algerian Electrical and Gas Industries Company aligns with the national policy to reduce reliance on hydrocarbon revenues.

It also demonstrates Algeria’s potential in generating foreign currency through non-hydrocarbon exports, highlighting the country’s emerging role in the global shift towards renewable energy.
