The EU Special Envoy to Libya, Nicola Orlando, said that the European Union is committed to supporting Libya in its fight against climate change and efforts to enhance sustainable resilience and prosperity.
Speaking during a workshop launch in Tripoli, Orlando highlighted the EU’s dedication to working alongside Libyan partners in addressing these critical issues.
Orlando joined Libya’s Minister of Environment, Ibrahim Munir, at the event, which marked the beginning of a workshop under the EU’s Sustainable Energy and Climate Change programme, managed by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).
The initiative aims to provide Libya with the tools and strategies needed to combat the adverse effects of climate change while promoting sustainable energy solutions.
“The EU stands with Libya in facing the challenge of climate change and in fostering resilience and sustainable prosperity,” Orlando stated. He emphasised that the EU’s support goes beyond just environmental concerns, aiming to build a stable and prosperous future for Libya.
The programme, which focuses on sustainable energy and climate action, is part of a broader EU effort to address the impacts of climate change in the Mediterranean region. It aims to bolster Libya’s capacity to manage its environmental resources and transition towards renewable energy sources.
Minister Munir expressed gratitude for the EU’s ongoing support and underscored the importance of international collaboration in addressing environmental challenges. He noted that Libya’s environment has been under strain due to years of conflict, making these initiatives crucial for the country’s recovery and long-term sustainability.
The workshop will include discussions on renewable energy, water management, and strategies to enhance Libya’s resilience against climate-induced challenges. It also aims to foster cooperation between Libyan institutions and international bodies to ensure effective implementation of environmental projects.
