Libya Launches Major Power Substation Project in Tobruk

On Saturday, the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) announced the launch of construction for a new power substation in Tobruk, a vital project aimed at improving the efficiency and stability of the city’s electricity network. The substation, with a capacity of 66/11 kV, is designed to alleviate pressure on the grid and ensure a more reliable power supply for residents and businesses in the area.

GECOL’s announcement follows the completion of the initial land survey, allowing the project to move forward. The work is being carried out by the Engineering Company for Electrical Works, with mechanical operations under the supervision of the Green Mountain Project Distribution Department.

In addition to the Tobruk project, GECOL has revealed plans for another 66/11 kV substation in the Lamalouda area of the Green Mountain region. The necessary land surveys will begin shortly. These projects are part of GECOL’s urgent strategy to enhance the national grid and address Libya’s ongoing electricity challenges.

For years, Libya has struggled with frequent power outages due to a combination of aging infrastructure, damage from conflict, and underinvestment. The country’s electricity network has been operating far below capacity, leading to widespread blackouts, especially during peak periods. The new substations in Tobruk and Lamalouda are expected to play a crucial role in stabilizing the grid and improving the quality of service for millions of Libyans.

Libya’s reliance on oil and gas to fuel its power plants, combined with political instability, has made the country’s energy sector vulnerable. However, these new projects by GECOL signal a concerted effort to strengthen the electricity grid and reduce power outages that have been a constant source of frustration for Libyans.

The Tobruk substation, in particular, is part of GECOL’s broader efforts to upgrade critical infrastructure across the country. These initiatives are seen as essential not only for providing reliable electricity but also for supporting Libya’s overall economic recovery, which has been hampered by instability and lack of investment in essential services.

GECOL’s continued work to modernize and expand the grid represents a positive step toward securing a stable power supply for the country. The company’s focus on critical projects like these, combined with plans for future improvements, offers hope for a more reliable and sustainable electricity network in the years to come.
