The Minister of Local Government in the Government of National Unity and head of the Emergency and Rapid Response Committee, Badr al-Din al-Toumi, held a meeting to review the committee’s action plan regarding the situation in Sabha municipality.
The meeting focused on the recent heavy rains that resulted in flooding and the formation of water pools across the region.
According to the Ministry’s media office, the meeting discussed various measures and actions taken to address the consequences of the heavy rainfall. Efforts were coordinated to mitigate damages, manage information, and provide support to the affected areas.
Al-Toumi commended the efforts of several entities, including the Ministry of Interior, the National Meteorological Centre, the Emergency Medicine and Support Centre, the General Electricity Company, the Water and Sewage Company, the National Safety Authority, the local call centre (1415), and the General Department of Environmental Health. All these organisations have been actively responding to the aftermath of the heavy rainfall in Sabha municipality.
During the meeting, al-Toumi had a phone conversation with Sabha’s mayor, Belhaj Ali, to gain firsthand information about the current conditions in the municipality. The mayor highlighted that the hardest-hit areas were the Cairo and Tahreer districts, which recorded the highest levels of rainfall.
The media office also mentioned that the meeting focused on assessing the needs of the National Meteorological Centre to ensure it can monitor weather conditions accurately across Libya. The availability of resources for other agencies, including the Emergency Medicine and Support Centre, the National Safety Authority, and the General Water and Sewage Company, was also reviewed to ensure they are fully equipped to deal with the ongoing crisis.
The committee continues to coordinate efforts to manage the crisis, ensuring that all government agencies involved have the necessary tools and information to support the people of Sabha.
