UNICEF’s office in Libya recently conducted a training session aimed at updating safe driving skills for drivers to enhance and develop their competencies, ensuring their ability to handle various aspects of their duties effectively.

According to the organization’s Facebook page, the training covered key topics such as vehicle inspection, safe driving techniques, and the importance of efficiently scheduling trips.

Libyan driver, Firas Elias, shared his insights from the training, saying, “I discovered new aspects of vehicle maintenance that I was previously unaware of.”

Another participant, Ahmed Al-Waer, remarked, “I learned many technical details about the vehicle that I did not know before, and I now see the importance of using them in the future.”

Traffic Accidents in July 2024

On September 9, the Ministry of Interior of the “Temporary National Unity Government” announced that 202 people were killed and 614 others injured due to traffic accidents in July 2024.

This was stated in the monthly report issued by the Department of Traffic Affairs and Licensing, which recorded 816 traffic incidents during July.

Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The county has for years been split between rival administrations.

Libya’s economy, heavily reliant on oil, has suffered due to the ongoing conflict. The instability has led to fluctuations in oil production and prices, impacting the global oil market and Libya’s economy.

The conflict has led to a significant humanitarian crisis in Libya, with thousands of people killed, and many more displaced. Migrants and refugees using Libya as a transit point to Europe have also faced dire conditions.

The planned elections for December 2021 were delayed due to disagreements over election laws and the eligibility of certain candidates. This delay has raised concerns about the feasibility of a peaceful political transition.

Despite the ceasefire, security remains a significant concern with sporadic fighting and the presence of mercenaries and foreign fighters. The unification of the military and the removal of foreign forces are crucial challenges.
