On Tuesday, Libya’s Parliament-designated Prime Minister, Osama Hammad, announced the launch of a major project to build a new teaching and treatment hospital at Derna University. The hospital will provide advanced medical services to the region while serving as an essential training center for medical students.

The new facility will be officially affiliated with Derna University and is planned to be located at the 2,000-unit housing project near the city’s western entrance. The structure and organization of the hospital will follow the framework outlined in the government’s decision, marking a significant step in the development of critical infrastructure for the city.

This initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to rebuild and modernize Derna, a city that has faced years of turmoil due to conflict and instability. According to a statement from the government’s media office, the hospital is a key component of a larger plan to revitalize the city, restore essential public services, and improve the quality of life for its residents.

Derna, once a thriving cultural and economic hub in eastern Libya, has endured significant challenges in recent years. The establishment of this hospital represents a critical milestone in its recovery. In addition to offering modern healthcare services, the hospital will play a vital role in medical education, helping to train future doctors and healthcare professionals who will serve both Derna and the wider region.

The hospital project is expected to be a cornerstone of Derna’s reconstruction efforts, reflecting the government’s commitment to addressing the city’s immediate needs while investing in its long-term development. By combining healthcare and education, the facility will enhance the quality of medical services available in the city, which have been limited due to years of neglect and conflict.

On a national level, this project aligns with Libya’s goal of improving healthcare services by integrating hospitals with academic institutions. The new hospital will adhere to international standards, providing both high-quality patient care and a rigorous educational environment for medical students.

The construction of this teaching hospital is seen as a turning point in Derna’s revival. It highlights the Parliament-designated government’s dedication to rebuilding the city, improving healthcare, and fostering a well-educated workforce that will contribute to Libya’s future.
