On Sunday, the German Deputy Ambassador to Libya, Sven Krauspe, met with Emad Al-Sayeh, the head of Libya’s High National Elections Commission (HNEC), to discuss the latest developments in the electoral process for municipal councils.

The discussions also covered the “PEPOL” project, which is funded by Germany and aims to support electoral processes in Libya. This project focuses on enhancing the efficiency and transparency of municipal elections, and providing the necessary resources for fair and credible elections across the country.

The German Embassy highlighted that the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is providing technical and advisory support to the HNEC, ensuring that international standards are met in Libya’s municipal electoral process.

This meeting reflects Germany’s ongoing commitment to supporting Libya’s democratic transition and bolstering the electoral framework. Both parties reaffirmed the importance of transparent and inclusive elections as key components of stabilising the country and ensuring the representation of all Libyan citizens.

The HNEC has been working closely with international partners to prepare for upcoming elections, despite the ongoing challenges posed by Libya’s political situation. The “PEPOL” project is seen as a vital component in the broader effort to restore stability and strengthen governance in Libya.

The meeting underscores the role that Germany and the international community are playing in assisting Libya’s path towards democracy, and the significance of continued collaboration between the HNEC and its international partners.
