The Libyan Parliament-designate government held a ministerial meeting to address several pressing issues, including illegal migration and the influx of Sudanese refugees.

The meeting was attended by key ministers such as Interior Minister Essam Abu Zariba, Minister of State for Illegal Immigration Affairs Fathi Al-Tebawi, Minister of Local Government Sami Al-Dawi, Minister of Education Jumaa Al-Jadeed, Minister of Technical and Vocational Education Dr Faraj Khalil Salem, and Minister of Health Othman Abdul Jalil.

The discussions focused on coordinating a joint strategy to manage illegal immigration and devising methods to support Sudanese refugees, especially students, with the new academic year beginning. Plans to open schools specifically for Sudanese students were also discussed.

The meeting reviewed the mechanisms for registering the Sudanese refugees, who now exceed 60,000 in the city of Kufra. Discussions centred on redistributing them to different areas to ease the burden on Kufra. Abu Zariba mentioned that the Ministry of Interior has developed a comprehensive data system to register all Sudanese refugees.

He further highlighted the security situation in southeast Libya and the efforts of the Joint Security Room, established in response to the influx of Sudanese refugees. Abu Zariba affirmed that the Ministry would spare no effort in addressing the root causes of illegal migration.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to submit the outcomes to the Prime Minister. This would allow for the formation of a specialised committee to tackle the overcrowding in Kufra due to the refugees and to explore ways to integrate them into Libya’s needs during their stay.
