The United States and United Kingdom have welcomed the appointment of a new Governor and Deputy Governor for the Central Bank of Libya.
In a statement, the US Embassy in Libya expressed its support for the agreement between the Libyan House of Representatives and the High Council of State, facilitated by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
The US Embassy highlighted the importance of this step, noting that the appointment of a technocratic and competent board of directors is the next crucial move.
The embassy’s statement said, “We share UNSMIL’s welcome of the appointment of a new Central Bank Governor and Deputy Governor.” It added that this agreement has the potential to restore trust and improve governance within this vital institution.
The embassy further urged Libyan parties to maintain the momentum created by this decision and reach a consensus on a transparent and accountable mechanism to manage Libya’s revenues for the benefit of all Libyan citizens.
Similarly, the UK Embassy in Libya also welcomed the appointments. In its own statement, the UK emphasised the need for all parties to agree on a reliable and accountable board of governors.
“Restoring trust in this key institution and rebuilding confidence with the Libyan people is essential,” the British Embassy said.
Both the US and UK embassies stressed the significance of these developments in strengthening Libya’s economic governance and restoring stability to the country.
