Libya & UK Discuss Cooperation in Combating Terrorism

Libya’s Attorney General, Al-Siddiq Al-Sour, held discussions with the Deputy Ambassador of the United Kingdom, Thomas Phipps, focusing on strengthening cooperation in the fight against terrorism and serious organised crime.

Both parties emphasised the importance of supporting and protecting the vital role of Libyan prosecutors in upholding the rule of law.

During the meeting, the two officials reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing joint efforts in combating security threats that affect both nations. The discussions also highlighted the significance of international collaboration to ensure the safety and effectiveness of legal institutions, particularly in prosecuting crimes that threaten peace and stability.

The British Deputy Ambassador expressed his country’s readiness to assist Libya in developing its legal and judicial capacities, particularly in areas related to terrorism and organised crime. Al-Sour and Phipps agreed on the need for ongoing support to ensure the safety of prosecutors, who play a crucial role in strengthening Libya’s legal system and enforcing the rule of law.

Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The country has for years been split between rival administrations.

Libya’s economy, heavily reliant on oil, has suffered due to the ongoing conflict. The instability has led to fluctuations in oil production and prices, impacting the global oil market and Libya’s economy.

The conflict has led to a significant humanitarian crisis in Libya, with thousands of people killed and many more displaced. Migrants and refugees using Libya as a transit point to Europe have also faced dire conditions.

The planned elections for December 2021 were delayed due to disagreements over election laws and the eligibility of certain candidates. This delay has raised concerns about the feasibility of a peaceful political transition.

Despite the ceasefire, security remains a significant concern with sporadic fighting and the presence of mercenaries and foreign fighters. The unification of the military and the removal of foreign forces are crucial challenges.
