Residents of Gharyan have openly rejected Prime Minister Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba’s decision, in his capacity as Defense Minister, to station the 54th Infantry Brigade (formerly the 8th Camp) within the city limits. In a video statement, the community articulated their unanimous opposition to the militarization of their city, which contravenes the reconciliation agreement issued on January 1, 2024, promoting non-violence and community-based security management.
The residents expressed their concerns over the potential sensitivities and strife the military presence could incite among the city’s inhabitants, affirming their support for yesterday’s statement by Gharyan locals on the same issue.
They condemned the decision as unjustified and irresponsible, urging Dbaiba to intervene immediately to cancel the order and preserve the peace and stability of the city.
The statement highlighted that Gharyan enjoys a state of security following the ravages of past conflicts, with all official and customary bodies rejecting any form of violence or armed presence.
The community members concluded their statement by reaffirming Gharyan’s commitment to fostering peace, unity, and the avoidance of discord.
