Libyan Minister of Justice Halima Al-Buseifi has urged Lebanon to release Hannibal Gaddafi into the custody of a neutral third-country embassy.
In a video statement, Al-Buseifi condemned Israel’s aggression against Lebanon and Gaza, calling on Lebanon to release all detainees, including Hannibal Gaddafi.
“We appeal to the Lebanese Justice Minister to cooperate with us on this matter by handing over Hannibal to a neutral third state. We are open to having this process supervised by judicial police, the Libyan Ministry of Justice, and in coordination with the Libyan Red Crescent,” she said.
Al-Buseifi also emphasised that Libya remains open to negotiating with Lebanon on the matter once the ongoing attacks conclude.
The Justice Minister stressed Libya’s commitment to national reconciliation, saying, “We want to rebuild our nation, put an end to conflicts, and unite for a peaceful Libya that accommodates all.”
Saadi Gaddafi, son of the former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, has confirmed that his brother Hannibal is safe, dismissing rumours about his death during Israeli airstrikes in southern Beirut.
In a statement on Sunday, Saadi reassured his followers by saying, “My brother, Captain Hannibal, is fine, thank God. I pray for his swift release.”
Hannibal Gaddafi’s lawyer, Reem Youssef Aldabri, also confirmed that her client is in good health and that there have been no new developments in his case. She refuted the social media reports claiming his death in the recent Israeli airstrikes, calling the news false.
Hannibal Gaddafi has been held by Lebanese authorities since 2015 in connection with the assassination of the Shia cleric Musa al-Sadr, who disappeared in Libya in 1978 during an official visit.
