In a recent interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, Fathi Al-Shibli, the head of Libya’s Voice of the People Party, emphasised the urgent need for reconciliation among Libya’s political leaders rather than among its citizens.
Al-Shibli criticised the current political climate, stating that the issue of national reconciliation has been co-opted for political gains by both the Presidential Council and the House of Representatives. He asserted, “The crisis in Libya lies with its politicians; we need reconciliation among the political class, not between the citizens.”
Highlighting the unity displayed by Libyans during the recent disaster in Derna, he remarked, “The Libyan people demonstrated solidarity in the face of adversity. When the hurricane struck Derna last year, citizens from all regions rallied together, showcasing that there are no social issues among the populace. The real problems lie with their leaders.”
This statement underscores the broader sentiment among many Libyans who believe that the focus should be on resolving political conflicts to foster stability and peace in the country.
Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The county has for years been split between rival administrations.

Despite the ceasefire, security remains a significant concern with sporadic fighting and the presence of mercenaries and foreign fighters. The unification of the military and the removal of foreign forces are crucial challenges.
