The Tunisian Observatory for Human Rights has confirmed the release of a group of Tunisian detainees from Libyan prisons.
In a statement issued on Friday, the observatory noted that the release followed coordination between Tunisian and Libyan authorities, adding that the freed detainees are expected to return to Tunisia soon.
Mustafa Abdelkebir, head of the observatory, stated that the released individuals were held in various detention centres across different regions of Libya.
Although the observatory did not disclose the exact number of detainees released, Abdelkebir revealed that approximately 150 Tunisian nationals remain in Libyan custody, including women and children.
Abdelkebir emphasised the importance of ongoing coordination between the two governments to ensure the safe return of all Tunisian detainees. He noted that many of those still detained were held for immigration-related offences, while others were allegedly involved in criminal activities or lacked proper identification.
This development reflects the broader efforts by Tunisian authorities to resolve issues affecting their citizens abroad, especially those detained under difficult conditions.
The Tunisian Observatory for Human Rights has been actively monitoring the situation of Tunisian detainees in Libya and called for further diplomatic engagement to facilitate the release of the remaining detainees.
Abdelkebir also urged both governments to address the root causes of irregular migration and strengthen legal frameworks to protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation and arbitrary detention.
