On Tuesday, Youssef Al-Agouri, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Committee in Libya’s House of Representatives, held a meeting with Lieutenant General Khaled Haftar, Chief of Staff of Security Units in the Libyan National Army (LNA), to discuss efforts to enhance national security and align foreign policy objectives.

According to a statement from the House of Representatives, the two officials met in Benghazi to address key security and foreign affairs issues, emphasizing the need for continued collaboration between political and military leadership to ensure Libya’s stability and sovereignty.

During the meeting, Al-Agouri praised the Libyan Armed Forces for their role in combating terrorism and extremism, as well as securing national borders from smuggling networks and criminal groups. He acknowledged the military’s efforts in maintaining internal stability and defending Libyan territory, which are vital to the country’s national security.

Al-Agouri also highlighted the Armed Forces’ humanitarian role during recent crises. He commended their response to Storm Daniel, which struck the city of Derna and other areas, and their support for Sudanese refugees fleeing conflict. He emphasized that the military’s work goes beyond security operations, playing a crucial role in national reconciliation, peacebuilding, and reconstruction efforts.

General Khaled Haftar reiterated the Armed Forces’ commitment to safeguarding Libya’s territorial integrity and ensuring security and stability across the country. He emphasized that the military remains a pillar of national unity and is essential in protecting Libya’s sovereignty.

Regarding the issue of irregular migration, Haftar clarified that Libya is a transit country rather than a source of migrants. He emphasized that the military is working to manage migration flows responsibly while ensuring that humanitarian principles are respected.

Al-Agouri and Haftar agreed that coordinated efforts between foreign policy and military operations are crucial for addressing national and regional challenges. They emphasized the importance of strengthening Libya’s diplomatic ties with neighboring countries, which will enhance national security and support the military’s objectives.

The two officials concluded the meeting by affirming their commitment to closer collaboration between the House of Representatives and the Armed Forces. They stressed that effective diplomacy is key to supporting military operations, maintaining regional stability, and promoting Libya’s interests on the international stage.

The focus will be on building regional partnerships and fostering cooperation with neighboring states to enhance security and boost Libya’s international standing.
