On Sunday, Libya’s acting Foreign Minister of the Government of National Unity (GNU), Taher Baour, reaffirmed Libya’s commitment to strengthening African cooperation and supporting regional security during the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum in Sochi, Russia.
Representing Libya at the forum’s inaugural ministerial conference, Baour emphasized Libya’s dedication to collaborative efforts against terrorism and extremism, underscoring the importance of international partnerships to achieve stability across Africa.
In his address, Baour highlighted Libya’s active support for African security initiatives, stating that “cooperation and partnership are essential for achieving security and stability on the continent.” Baour’s participation at the Sochi forum, which brought together African nations and Russian representatives, signals Libya’s focus on building alliances to address common challenges impacting African nations.
Discussions at the conference centered on a range of pressing issues affecting both Africa and Russia, with a strong emphasis on counter-terrorism and scientific and technological development. Libya’s delegation joined in these discussions, aiming to strengthen partnerships that support stability, economic growth, and resilience for African nations.
One significant outcome of the forum was a joint African-Russian statement on combating terrorism, committing both parties to closer coordination on security issues and reinforcing the need for collaboration to address mutual threats. The statement represents an important step in Africa-Russia relations, aligning with Libya’s own goals for a more secure and cooperative continent.
On the sidelines of the conference, Baour met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to discuss Libya-Russia relations and recent developments in the region. According to a statement from Libya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two ministers underscored the importance of maintaining ongoing political consultations, particularly regarding issues on the United Nations Security Council agenda.
Libya’s active role at the Russia-Africa forum reflects its commitment to addressing African challenges alongside regional and international partners. The outcomes of the forum highlight a shared vision between Libya, Russia, and African nations to combat terrorism and foster sustainable development across the continent. This forum, with its focus on partnership and collaboration, strengthens Libya’s position as a key player in advancing security and progress for Africa.
