Emad Al-Sayah, head of the High National Elections Commission (HNEC), held a wide-ranging meeting with various security bodies in Libya’s western region to address potential challenges facing the upcoming municipal council elections.

During the meeting, attendees discussed a range of issues focused on strengthening coordination between HNEC and the security agencies to overcome any obstacles that may arise during the voting process.

The municipal elections for the first group of councils in 2024 are scheduled for 16 November.

On Monday, the Libyan Interior Ministry of the Parliament-designate government held a joint meeting with the High National Elections Commission (HNEC).

The discussion focused on the security plan to ensure safety during the upcoming municipal elections, scheduled for 16 November, as part of preparations to guarantee a secure and transparent voting process.

Senior officials from both sides attended the meeting, alongside representatives from various security agencies, where they reviewed the necessary arrangements to secure polling centres and provide a safe environment for voters, observers, and staff.

In his address, Interior Minister Major General Issam Abu Zariba, representing the eastern government, reaffirmed the Ministry’s full readiness to secure the elections. He emphasised the importance of close coordination with HNEC to ensure everyone’s safety at polling stations.

The minister also urged police chiefs to enhance field cooperation between different units, activate rapid response teams for any emergencies, and set up checkpoints at the entry and exit points of the municipalities involved.
