A shocking incident at the Air Defence Academy in Misrata has reignited concerns about human rights within military institutions affiliated with the Presidential Council.
Ali Al-Farjani, an 18-year-old cadet, died after allegedly enduring three days of brutal torture by senior students and officials at the academy.
Ali joined the academy on 26 October 2024, aspiring to serve his country. However, just 13 days later, he was admitted to intensive care following severe abuse, which reportedly began after a minor request to his trainer.
He remained in a coma for eight days before passing away on 14 November 2024.
Ali’s brother, Hussein Al-Farjani, disclosed the ordeal in a public statement, accusing academy officials of attempting to cover up the incident by falsely attributing the cause of death to a gastrointestinal illness.
Legal proceedings have begun under the Misrata Military Prosecutor, but there has been limited response from local authorities or senior military officials.
The tragedy underscores urgent calls for reform within military institutions and the promotion of human rights to prevent further abuses.
