On Saturday, the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) of Libya announced that the results of the recent municipal council elections will be revealed this Sunday. Emad Al-Sayeh, head of the HNEC, shared the update through his official account on X (formerly Twitter), as anticipation builds across the country for the results.
Salem Ben Tahia, an advisor to the Commission, provided details on the progress of the election process.
He confirmed that 1,550 forms containing election results from municipalities have been received and that 78% of the data entry process has been completed as of Tuesday afternoon. Out of a total of 2,800 forms, a significant portion has already been processed, with efforts ongoing to finalize the remaining data.
The next stage, according to Ben Tahia, involves a thorough auditing process to ensure accuracy and transparency. Preliminary results will be announced in a press conference once the review is complete. However, discrepancies in ballot counts recorded on some forms have required the reopening of certain ballot boxes for verification. This issue, while minor, has caused slight delays in the auditing phase.
Despite these challenges, Ben Tahia reassured that operations are progressing efficiently. He also hinted that the final results could be announced within the next two days, depending on the completion of the auditing stage.
Municipal elections are a cornerstone of Libya’s efforts to rebuild its governance structures and strengthen local democracy. They empower citizens to elect councils tasked with managing essential community functions, including infrastructure, public services, and development projects.
This year’s municipal elections are particularly significant as Libya continues its broader push toward political stabilization after years of conflict and division. Transparent and credible elections are seen as critical to restoring public trust in governance and addressing the immediate needs of local communities.
