On Saturday, Saudi Arabia’s King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) stepped up to provide critical support to families in Libya affected by the catastrophic Storm Daniel.
Recently, 700 food baskets were distributed in the city of Shahat, reaching 4,301 individuals in desperate need.
This initiative, carried out in collaboration with the Libyan Red Crescent, is part of a broader humanitarian response to alleviate the suffering of those hit hardest by the disaster.
Storm Daniel struck Libya in September 2023, leaving a trail of destruction and tragedy. The eastern city of Derna bore the brunt of the storm when two dams collapsed, unleashing a torrent of water that swept away entire neighborhoods. Over 11,000 lives were lost, and thousands remain missing, marking one of the deadliest natural disasters in the region’s history.
The floods displaced tens of thousands and severely damaged critical infrastructure, including roads, hospitals, and homes.
In response to this crisis, Saudi Arabia acted swiftly. Under the directives of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, KSrelief dispatched multiple relief planes to Libya.
These flights have delivered hundreds of tons of essential aid, including food supplies and shelter materials, to affected areas. The most recent shipment, comprising 90 tons of food assistance, landed in Benghazi as part of ongoing efforts to meet the urgent needs of flood victims.
Libya’s recovery from this disaster is compounded by its existing challenges. Years of political instability and conflict have weakened the nation’s infrastructure and governance. The country remains divided between the Government of National Unity in Tripoli, led by Abdul Hamid Dbaiba and the eastern-based administration.
As Libya faces the long road to recovery, continued international support will be crucial in rebuilding communities and preparing for future crises.
