European Commissioner for Promoting the European Way of Life, Margaritis Schinas, confirmed on Friday that Europe is moving and working actively to push towards stability and security in the Mediterranean region, saying “others must work in a similar direction.”
After the weekly meeting of the European Security Union Strategy, which was held exceptionally on Friday, Schinas said while referring to the Libyan crisis that achieving security on the borders of the united bloc countries is the mission and goal of Europe.
He added that the European Union would not hand over its security and the sovereignty of its countries to any other party.
According to the Italian news agency Aki, he pointed out that countries and institutions of the European Union are working earnestly to reduce tensions and escalation in the eastern Mediterranean.
Schinas was keen to welcome the role played by French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel intending to defuse the crisis in the region.
As for the Turkish role in what is going on, the Vice-President of the Commission has reiterated his previous words, as he believed that “Turkey must now make its geopolitical decision and choose on which side of history it wants to stand.”
According to Schinas, the Europeans are keen to take advantage of the time remaining until the informal meeting of their foreign ministers takes place at the end of next month, to spread a message that their union is sending strength to stability, peace, and security in troubled regions.
It is noteworthy that the committee discussed during its meeting the current steps to defuse the crisis in the Mediterranean region, especially the diplomatic efforts made by the High Representative for Security and Foreign Policy Josep Borrell in this matter.
